Parkinsons – a degenerative and so far incurable disease
Worldwide more and more patients
There are about 40.000 patients in Belgium, and the number is growing.
Experts even talk about a ‘pandemic’ :
1990: circa 3 million patients worldwide
2015: circa 6.5 million patients
2040: expected 12.2 to 14.2 million patients
Also at a young age
Parkinson’s is not only a disease for ‘older people’. 10% of patients are younger than 50.
Day after day, the disease progresses
As Patrick, diagnosed almost 15 years ago, at the age of 40, testifies: « The days that I would have considered horrible in the past are now experienced as ‘good days’. The horrible days become more and more difficult… Really nasty, this disease. »
No cure so far
Existing treatments only temporarily relieve the symptoms. Yet, as the disease progresses, they become less effective. To date, nothing exists to slow down, stop or even reverse the evolution of the disease…
Never give up
Patrick has decided to step up. His motto? « Never give up ! » That’s why he created the Demoucelle Parkinson Charity aiming to help find a cure for Parkinson’s.
A solution in the next decade?
The Demoucelle Parkinson Charity helps find a solution within the next 10 years. Its mission: accelerate the most promising scientific projects worldwide. The organisation has already supported 9 very promising disease modifying projects in Europe and in the United States.
